“Feminine Irreverence” was created by Maria in collaboration with three New York-based women artists who work with vibrant colors and whose themes and explorations range from pop culture to daily life to theatrical narratives: Katherine BernhardtNatalie Frank and Trudy Benson. These women have many things in common: their passion for color and for painting as a preferred medium, the shared city that they call home and the uncontrollable need to express themselves through art. Maria has known these women personally and professionally for many years and has closely examined their archives and current shows looking for the perfect pieces for this collection.  She is always striving for a reproduction that is authentic to the artists’ works while selecting every detail, designing repeats and patterns, and finding special hues and pigments – ultimately creating accessories that are unique and special, that can be worn up or down, and are true pieces of art.

With her debut collection, Maria Brito features three limited edition clutches with artworks by Erik Parker, Carlos Rolon/Dzine and  Kenny  Scharf.  These  day-to-evening  accessories  accommodate  the  haute  experience of art, as well as the utilitarian simplicity of a well-designed bag.  This particular collection is the result of Maria’s contemporary art practice and savvy design strategy. For a simple start, the rectangular shape resembles a canvas much more than a duffel bag, T-shirt or pair of sneakers.  The clutches are faithful reproductions of the artists’ works, whether archival or culled from current exhibitions. Each pattern is printed on acrylic using museum-quality techniques so that over time their colors will deepen and brighten. And like any limited-edition print, the artist signatures are etched on the verso. The patterns will talk to a person who wants to accessorize in a fun way, as well as to those familiar with the designs These artists love to work with color and patterns, repetitions and rhythm. They are looking to inspire their audiences.
